Calming Lavender Vanilla Relaxation Salve

Life can be stressful. Farm life even more so at times. 

Stress can lead health problems and trouble sleeping, so reducing anxiety and stress is very important. 

However, when I've got fertile eggs incubating and getting ready to hatch, I can't help but worry about them and get up to check on them in the incubator many times each night. 

That leads to terrible sleeping habits, as you can imagine.

Hatching eggs under a broody hen takes away much of my stress, since she handles it all, the heat, humidity, turning and so forth.

Sometimes I wonder who handles the incubation period better - me or the broody hen. Then I realize that the hen has it all under control.

She seems to achieve an almost zen-like quality about her. Tranquility surrounds her as she sits for those three weeks on her eggs until they hatch.

Even once the chicks hatch, I worry about them - are they too cold, are they all normal, are they safe from rats and snakes? While the broody hen takes it all in stride.

So, unable to channel her calm, instead I decided to whip up a batch of Calming Lavender Vanilla Relaxation Salve using lavender, which is known for its stress-relieving qualities, and some vanilla, which not only reduces anxiety but also acts as a mild sedative or tranquilizer.

I smear a bit of the salve on my pulse points before bedtime (inside of wrists, throat, behind my ears, etc.) and my body heat warms the salve and dissipates the heady aroma which leads to a more restful sleep.

Calming Lavender Vanilla Relaxation Salve

What you need (hover over each ingredient for the amazon link to purchase):

Mason Jar
Wooden chopstick
1/2 Cup coconut oil
1/4 Cup beeswax (I use the pastilles because they melt so much quicker than the bars)
What to do:

Melt the coconut oil and beeswax in the mason jar using a candle warmer, microwave or by setting the mason jar in a shallow pan of simmering water. 

Stir with the chopstick until the ingredients are combined. 

Remove from heat and add the essential oils. Stir once more and then carefully pour the hot mixture into your containers. Let sit until solidified. 

Store in a cool, dark place. Use as needed for a more tranquil, restful sleep.
