Two-Ingredient Egg Chaffles

A "chaffle" is a two-ingredient egg and cheese waffle that contains no flour, baking powder or other ingredients, making them perfect for low carb or keto diets.

I generally ignore stuff that goes viral on Tiktok or elsewhere on social media because, honestly, by the time I find out about it, it's already passe and the masses have moved onto the next latest and greatest trend.

Also, and even more honestly, I'm just not really cool enough to even be on Tiktok.

Two-Ingredient Egg Chaffles

But when the "chaffle" started showing up on all my feeds, I figured this one was worth trying out. Mostly, because it involves eggs. I just had to try the two-ingredient egg chaffle out for myself and see what all the fuss is about.

Also, since we're being honest, because I impulse-bought one of those cute little Dash waffle makers and have barely used it, so this gave me an excuse.

So, what do you think? Is this a Tiktok trend that's sticking around? Let's find out.

What is a Chaffle?

Put simply, a "chaffle" is a waffle made with just two ingredients : cheese and eggs. When you cook them, they turn out equal parts crispy, chewy and cheesy.

Of course you can add other ingredients to the basic recipes (I've seen recipes that call for bacon, sausage, pickles, or even herbs like sage or parsley), but bottom line it's a mixture of whisked eggs and shredded cheese cooked in a mini waffle iron.

What Do I Need to Make a Chaffle?

If you don't have a 4" Dash mini waffle iron, I highly recommend buying one (or two!). They're inexpensive, come in like a bazillion colors and can obviously be used for regular waffles too.

You could also use a regular-sized waffle iron to make chaffles, but for some reason, the Tiktok community has seized on the mini version. Also, it's a great size to turn into an egg sandwich if you aren't worried about carbs....So that's what we're making.

Other than the waffle iron, you'll just need a medium bowl and a whisk.

Oh and eggs of course. And you'll also need cheese. You can use literally any type of cheese you would like - mozzarella, cheddar, gruyere, fontina, gouda, etc. I chose to use gouda.

And if you wish you can season your chaffles with salt and pepper. I opted to just use some fresh cracked black pepper and then garnished my chaffles with chopped scallions. Again, those are optional.

How To Make Two-Ingredient Egg Chaffles

makes 4.

What you Need |

3 eggs

1 1/2 cups shredded cheese

Optional salt, pepper, chopped scallions

What you Do |

Preheat your mini waffle maker. In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs then stir in the cheese. Pour 1/4 of the egg mixture into the waffle iron, just enough to cover the bottom.

Close the waffle iron and let cook for 3-4 minutes, until the top is golden brown.

Use the tines of a fork to gently pry the chaffle off and onto a plate. Repeat with the rest of the egg mixture. Garnish as desired.

The Verdict on Two-Ingredient Egg Chaffles

First of all let me say that you really can't go wrong with eggs and cheese. Especially melty cheese.

That said, although I did like the crispy cheese aspect, you can get the same effect making scrambled eggs in a skillet, but adding the cheese first and letting it melt and crisp up.

The chaffles were super messy to make - I'm not sure my Dash will ever recover! Cheese was sliding down the sides, etc. But they are cute. I think kids would really love them.

So bottom line, I'm undecided. I'll probably make them again sometime and add some additional ingredients, and this time use a bit less of the egg mixture for each one - but I doubt I would ever include them in a future cookbook!

Like most Tiktok viral trends, this one will likely be short-lived. It's a cute trend. But that's about it.
