Chicken Coop Inspiration: Converting a Playhouse
When you get started with a backyard flock of chickens, your largest expense by far will be their coop.
But if you're somewhat handy, you can save a lot of money by converting a playhouse, garden shed or even a barn stall into a chicken coop.
With some elbow grease, scraps, and odds and ends, you can turn almost any small outbuilding into a coop that will keep your chickens safe and happy.
And even better, all of your family members can be a part of creating a beautiful space for your chickens to live in.
I recently had the pleasure of chatting with a lovely family from Redding, California and they shared how they turned the kids old playhouse into an adorable chicken coop - for only about $300!
Truly inspiring... I hope you enjoy reading.
Chicken Coop Inspiration: Converting a Playhouse
Mom told me that she's rarely in photos because she's usually the photographer, but she said the whole family, kids included, had so much fun building their coop.
She said, "We were able to scrap wood, cabinet pieces, an old closet door, and friends gave us tin roof pieces and roof tiles for free! We were able to re-purpose the play house into a chicken coop mansion for less than $300." (I personally love how they repurposed the cabinet doors!)
And she said some friends even got in on the action and helped paint their new chicken coop - which is now the same color as their house!
Mya, age 17, Ezra, age 12, Eden Rose, age 10, and Joel, age 8, when the photos were taken even tried hatching their own chicks.
Mom said, "We were only able to hatch two chicks from the 8 we were given. They are our Barred Rocks.
We picked up more chicks as the children were devastated that not all the “babies” made it. Ezra turned the eggs three times a day, a true labor of love."
Her husband took apart a hinged storage box they used to store pool supplies in the summer and made the greatest brooder box!
I love the photo of them looking at themselves in a Dollar Tree mirror, and the feather duster next to their warming plate.
Mom said, "Our girls have slowed down their laying, so we’re excited to get more chicks this Spring!"
Thanks to the whole family for letting me share these wonderful photos and their beautiful chicken coop.
I hope you get some inspiration to build or upgrade your chicken coop - and make it a family affair!
