Can Chickens Eat Chocolate?
No, chickens should never be fed chocolate or other foods that contain caffeine. Even a small amount of caffeine can cause rapid heartbeat or even cardiac arrest in chickens. Caffeine is also toxic to dogs and cats.
Caffeine is found in chocolate, coffee, and tea, as well as some sports drinks.
All of these products contain caffeine, which contains a substance called methylxanthine. Methylxanthine leads to increased heartbeat and blood pressure, and too much can lead to cardiac arrest, so should never be fed to chickens.
Chocolate also contains a compound called theobromine, which chickens can't process. Even a small amount can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, rapid heartbeat, seizures, coma or death in your chickens (or your dog).
Chickens should never be fed chocolate or caffeine in any amount.
Although a chocolate cake or chocolate donut contains less caffeine than a chocolate bar, it's still not a great idea to give to your chickens. Caffeine aside, the sugar and fats in junk food and baked goods aren't good for chickens either.
