Can Chickens Eat Strawberries?

Strawberries, and other types of berries, are nutritious treats for your chickens.

Strawberries are a nutritious treat for your chickens - and they will love them. I always save the strawberry tops for my chickens when I buy strawberries.

Strawberries act as anti-oxidants and are packed with fiber and nutrients like calcium, folate, manganese, and potassium.

Can Chickens Eat Strawberries?

Chickens can absolutely eat strawberries. As with other treats, they should be limited to no more than 10% of their total diet, and fed in moderation, but as treats go, strawberries are some of the best.

Strawberries are high in Vitamins 65, C and K. They support immune and bone health, improve blood pressure, and support healthy metabolism.

The entire plant - the fruit, caps, stems, and leaves are fine for chickens to eat. And in fact, the strawberry tops contain iron and tannins which are a digestive aid.

Since they are high in fruit sugars, eating an excess of strawberries can cause diarrhea in chickens. So like with everything, moderation is the way to go.

As with other treats, in total they should not exceed 10% of your flock's total diet, which equals only about 1 or 2 tablespoons per bird per day.

And be sure to wash berries that might have been sprayed with herbicides or pesticides, or even better, grow your own berries, visit a local strawberry farm, or buy organic berries.
