From her beautiful farm in Maine, Lisa has contributed her expert advice to the backyard chicken keeping community for almost two decades and has recently entered the culinary arena with the release of her debut cookbook, The Fresh Eggs Daily Cookbook (HarperCollins, 2022) which received a starred review from Publishers Weekly and was chosen as an Amazon editors pick for Best Cookbooks, Food & Wine.

More about Lisa

She's not a chicken, she's the G.O.A.T!

Backyard Chicken Keeping Expert/"Eggspert"

With an audience of nearly a million followers that spans the globe, 5th generation chicken keeper and "eggspert" Lisa Steele is well-recognized as the creative force behind Fresh Eggs Daily®, the most popular destination for natural poultry keeping advice on the internet, and one of the leading experts in the backyard chicken keeping community.

Lisa has been dishing out her expert advice on raising chickens, ducks and geese naturally as well as gardening and growing herbs via her Better Homes and Gardens award-winning blog and social media platform Fresh Eggs Daily for more than a decade.

Her articles on raising backyard flocks have appeared in Backyard Poultry, Hobby Farm, Hobby Farm Home, Chickens and Grit magazines and in the Farmers Almanac and the Old Farmers Almanac.

Carrying on a time-honored family tradition (she grew up across the street from her grandparents chicken farm in Massachusetts), Lisa is also a Maine Master Gardener and accomplished "coop to kitchen" cook.

She also shares recipes on her sister site which feature fresh eggs from her coop and fresh produce and herbs from her garden.

The Early Years

After graduating from college with a degree in Business Administration/Accounting from Bryant University in Rhode Island, Lisa moved to New York. She worked on Wall Street for 8 years, then quit the rat race, and opened a bookstore on Long Island.

After several years, Lisa met her future husband who was in the Navy stationed in Pensacola, so she eventually sold the bookstore and moved to Florida after they got married.

Two years later, her husband was transferred to Virginia, so they bought a small farm outside of Norfolk so their two horses could live on their property instead of being boarded as they had been previously, not realizing that history was about to repeat itself.

In 2009, during the recession and after quitting the latest in a long line of "boring" accounting jobs, Lisa decided she wanted goats. It seemed everyone was making their own soap and goat milk cheese. Lisa's husband didn't think goats sounded like too much fun and counter-offered with chickens. One of the guys he worked with had just gotten chickens and was raving about them.

Having raised chickens as a child and been chased by their rooster and pecked by broody hens, Lisa wasn't thrilled, but agreed - figuring she would talk him into the goats later. One trip to the local feed store later, they were the proud owners of 6 baby chicks and 2 ducklings.

With her family background and experience, Lisa quickly became the go-to girl for advice on raising backyard chickens on social media, which quickly turned into a blog. That blog led to her first book deal in 2013.

Author

After the successful launch of her first book Fresh Eggs Daily: Raising Happy, Healthy Chickens Naturally, Lisa went on to write six more books on raising backyard flocks.

With more than 175,000 copies of her poultry books in print, Lisa is one of the most popular, top-selling poultry authors of all time and considered one of the foremost experts in raising backyard flocks.

Her book DIY Chicken Keeping has been translated into French and German, and her childrens book Let's Hatch Chicks! was shortlisted for an AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prize for Excellence in Childrens Science Books.

Cookbook Author

After writing books on raising poultry for almost ten years, Lisa decided that the natural progression would be to write an egg cookbook. Lisa's debut cookbook titled The Fresh Eggs Daily Cookbook was published by the HarperCelebrate imprint of HarperCollins and received a coveted starred review by Publishers Weekly. It was also chosen as a Pick of the Month and Best Book of the Month: Cookbooks, Food & Wine by the editors at Amazon. The Fresh Eggs Daily Cookbook has been translated into Russian.

Lisa's second cookbook In Season: 125+ Sweet and Savory Recipes Celebrating Simple, Fresh Ingredients is coming out in May 2026.

She is a proud member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals and the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance and is currently working on her third cookbook which is due out in September 2027.
