The 10th Anniversary of Gardening with Chickens

It's been ten years since the first edition of Gardening with Chickens came out. It was time for an upgrade.

I originally wrote my third book Gardening with Chickens right as we were in the process of moving to Maine from Virginia back in 2015.

To say that I've learned a lot over the past decade would be an understatement! So I am excited to announce that the 10th Anniversary edition of Gardening with Chickens is coming out March 17th!

I not only honed my skills raising chickens and ducks in a cold climate, we added geese to our flock. And I had to relearn basically everything I knew about gardening, having moved from planting zone 8b to planting zone 5a.

I now lived in a place that not only went below freezing in the winter, it went below ZERO!

But I was determined to continue gardening. Almost immediately after moving and getting settled, I signed up for the Master Gardener course offered by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Service.

(I learned so much from that course and highly recommend you find one in your local area and take it. Such great information from expert gardeners.)

And I started planting. I grew corn and pumpkins. I grew tomatoes and carrots and cucumbers. I grew eggplant and all kinds of leafy greens. And of course I grew my favorite crop - garlic.

I built raised beds, I constructed a fenced in garden area, I planted a kitchen herb garden. And I started landscaping our new chicken run.

Then last year, I realized that my original book was ten years old.

Coincidentally, the original edition was on the verge of going out of print, so I considered that a sign from the book gods and set about re-issuing a 10-year anniversary edition.

The team at Homestead Living was immediately receptive to the idea and they have been such a joy to work with. I went through the book with a fine toothed comb and decided which parts we would keep and which could either be ditched or improved.

I added everything I've learned over the past ten years to give you, the reader, all the tools you need to raise a happy, healthy flock and grow a bountiful garden.

And best of all, we added all new, absolutely gorgeous photographs.

I enlisted two of my best friends to help, and we had a blast. Over the course of three days, we reshot the entire book and were able to highlight all of our gorgeous chickens, gardens, and most of all, our friendship.

So whether you have the original version of Gardening with Chickens or not, I hope you'll consider pre-ordering the new edition. I promise you, there is SO much more information in the new book.

I now had the perspective of living in both a hot, and cold, snowy climate and that additional insight added so much value to the new edition of the book.
